Alexander :: Pregnancy + Labor Story

I cannot believe that this baby boy is about to turn one and I have yet to publish his birth story. I'm so embarrassed, but at the same time, I'm not because y'all, I have three boys and let me tell you, life is busy around here. What's important is that I'm finally doing it, right? So, here's the rundown of how little Alex came into this world.

How I Found Out + Reaction

I feel like I always say this, but this pregnancy took me by complete surprise. I found out I was pregnant just 5 months after I had Marcus -- yup. You read that right, five months. I cannot tell you how surprised I was when I took the test.

I first suspected I was pregnant when I was on vacation and we were driving home from Disneyland to La Quinta. Well, my husband suspected it. I was getting really car sick and could not keep myself composed for a two-hour drive. I never get car sick, so that was really not like me.

On a late Walmart run, after we arrived in La Quinta, my husband grabbed a pregnancy test and casually mentioned that I should take it because it's a possibility. Ya never know until you know, right?

So, I took it to humor him. He and my siblings were at the door waiting for the results. There was one bold line and one very faint line, so of course, I thought, a false positive. I walked out and told him, I'm probably not pregnant, but there is a faint line that I think I'm seeing. Everyone passed around the test and we couldn't decide if it was positive or negative. We decided that he would go back to Walmart in the morning and get one of those tests that spell it out for you -- not pregnant.

Fast forward to the next morning and test, boom -- pregnant.

We told close family and friends and the reactions were mostly good. Most of everyone we told was excited to hear that we were pregnant, but some family members thought it was too soon and that I needed to lose the baby weight first -- oh well, someone's gotta be that person, right? My husband was thrilled which is the most important reaction to me and I too was pleasantly surprised because even though I wasn't expecting it,  I do love babies.

At Disneyland; totally unaware that I'm about to have another baby

The Pregnancy

This pregnancy was rough because I had two other kids both under the age of two who were not letting me rest when I needed to, but other than that pregnancy itself was normal -- no complications or risks; thank you Jesus. I do feel like this pregnancy zoomed by though. I mean, I was pregnant and then I had the baby. Everything else is a hazy blur that I can not remember.

I announced on  Instagram at 14 weeks (with the photo above) and then booked an appointment at 15 weeks to find out the gender because I was sooooo hoping for a daughter. Y'all, I went to that appointment and Alex had his legs crossed with the umbilical cord in the middle and they could not see any boy parts. The ultrasound tech told me it's a girl, but to come back in two days just to make sure.

I WAS SO EXCITED TO BE HAVING A GIRL and was already thinking of girl names, planning all the cute mom daughter things we'd do annnnnnnd then I went back to double-check that my joy was not short-lived. Well, I got on the table, she jellied up my belly and started to look. It wasn't long before she broke the silence and said, "well, good thing you came back because it's definitely not a girl." HAHA. I cannot tell you how funny I found that to be because even though I was getting excited about a baby girl, the back of my mind was always like with your luck, it's a boy, just watch.

On the drive home from that appointment, my husband and I talked boy names. Alexander Jude was decided right there and then, no other opinions needed. I was ready to meet that sweet baby boy then and there.

late February ::  7 mo. pregnant and exhausted

Soooooo, the pregnancy went on until March when I started to have trouble walking and running after Marcus, so we sent him to stay at my mom's on the weekends and when my husband had school all day. He was too energetic and too much of a thrill-seeker, so keeping him safe as I was waddling everywhere was really hard.

On April 17th, I went to a routine check-up and was told that I was 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced. I was told that if I suspected anything, to call in and go in because of my last pregnancy with Marcus where my water broke and I had the baby within 2 hours of it breaking. I went home and was excited because Marcus had come early and I was secretly hoping that Alex would too. I was so over being pregnant.

So, on the 20th, I kept noticing that my underwear was wet after changing several times. I called in and the doctor on call told me to come in. I went on in and the nurses on staff told me it was a very busy night thus far. They showed me to my room and then the head nurse came in, told me everyone was busy and that she would be taking care of me. She also mentioned that she hopes the night quiets down from here on out.

I was never seen by the doctor and after the nurse tested for amniotic fluid, I was dismissed and quickly sent me home because the test did not show my water had broken. I was furious because I was having contractions every eight to six minutes, but the nurse insisted that I was fine and told me to drink lots of water. She told me I probably peed myself and I was instructed not call  / come back unless my contractions were less than 5 minutes apart.

Wellllllllllll, the next four days were literal torture. I was contracting 6 to 4 minutes a majority of the day, but would have a gap of 10 minutes in between, so I didn't call in. I sat, sometimes crying from the pain, but waited for the next doctor's appointment because I'm that patient that does not like to bother medical staff.

Labor + Birth

My next OBGYN appointment was 4 days after my hospital visit and my sister tells me that I seemed completely out of it. Probably because I was. I was starting to feel like my back was going to break with every step that I took. Anyway, I arrived at the office for my afternoon appointment, had the baby's heartbeat checked and then told my doctor what had happened on Saturday. Because I was 34 weeks (1 day shy of 35 weeks), she said that she would check to see if my water was actually broken.

She went to check and could not find the amniotic fluid sac and mentioned that it was unusually wet down there. I was now 5 cm dilated and my contractions were consistent on her monitor. She told me she was sending me straight to the hospital and told me that I was having this baby today.

Excited, I went down to my car, got in and drove myself to the hospital -- luckily my husband was having his nursing school clinical in the same hospital, so we met in the parking lot and then onward to the maternity ward.

I checked in, they hooked me up to the machines and my husband decided he wanted to drive Marcus and Felix to my mom's. I told him to stay because they were fine with my sister, but he insisted on going. The nurse said that it could be a while, so he left and I was alone in a room waiting for my doctor.

While chatting with my nurse, I had mentioned that my babies tend to come fast, so we both decided that it would be best to get my epidural before they place the Pitocin in my system. My contractions were consistent, so we got the epidural, and shortly after the Pitocin went in. Fifteen minutes in, the Pitocin made the baby's heart drop a bit, so the nurse stopped it and said they'd wait a bit more before starting up again. They called my doctor and told her to come soon because my contractions were speeding up on the machine.

Literally five minutes after I had the Pitocin stopped, I felt pressure, so I told the nurse. She lifted the blanket to see Alex crowning. She rushed out of the room, rushed back in with 4 other nurses accompanying her starting to get the room ready for delivery and my doctor flew in like a rushing bullet.

The nurse's hand was stopping Alex from popping out and all I heard was "don't push, don't move, don't laugh, this baby is coming and we aren't ready!" The doctor grabbed some gloves and her gown, popped down and said, "okay, push" and with that one-half push, my little baby boy was earthside at 6:09 pm April 24, 2019, weighing 6 pounds 7 ounces.

And right as baby boy popped out into the doctor's hands, in waltz my husband asking, "wait, did I miss it."  They placed the baby on my chest after my husband cut the cord and all the nurses marveled at how quick everything went. Several of them joked that I should have more babies because that was a breeze.

Alexander was quick to latch, his blood sugar levels quickly stabilized, and he passed all his screening with soaring colors. We spent two days in the hospital and then off we went to meet his brothers and start life as a family of five.

Thinking Back

I wish I would have written this blog post earlier. Haha, but really all jokes aside, one thing I wish I did differently was to advocate for myself when that nurse sent me away. I was at home in active labor for four days and had all my water been depleted, both my baby and I could have suffered from a life-threatening infection. Worst case scenario, we both could have died.

My water sac was slowly leaking and I knew I wasn't crazy, but I also trusted that the medical staff was doing their job. That nurse clearly didn't want another patient and I saw her again when I went in to give birth -- to which she rolled her eyes and avoided my room my entire stay.

At this hospital, the head nurse is supposed to check in on you each morning and she never did come to see me even though she was on the floor. My husband said she greeted him nicely on the second day, but that's probably because I didn't rat her out to her supervisor. Whatever her reasoning was, I hope that she treats patients better.

Anywaaaaaay, life with Alex is amazing, I can't tell you how much joy this baby boy has brought to our little family. We are fully enjoying our sweet chunk of a many, so happy that he's healthy and thriving along with the rest of us.

Marcus :: Pregnancy + Labor Story

While Felix's pregnancy and labor story was in depth and full of details, I feel as this one was a blur and went by super fast now that baby has officially been out of the womb for a month. I don't have any bump pictures (or any pictures for that matter) this time around because I was chasing a toddler the entire time and selfies are a thing of the past -- only thing I take pictures now is the kids and the occasional cold coffee sitting in a mug, but that's life and I love it. Anyways, without further ado,  here are all the details as I remember them.

How I Found Out + Reaction

This pregnancy took me by complete surprise. I thought I was pregnant about a month before, but all the tests I took came out negative. My husband told me to stop taking them because they cost a fortune and I probably wasn't pregnant if they've all been negative thus far -- I agreed. Late October I had planned to get my wisdom teeth pulled and the surgeon told me to make sure that I wasn't pregnant when coming in for the operation.

A week prior to the surgery, even though I felt fine and probably wasn't pregnant, I went ahead and took it upon myself to buy a pregnancy test just because you can never be to sure. And guess what, I was right -- the test came back positive!

I didn't believe it, so I took another test, and it too came back positive. I was pretty speechless to be honest. I stood in the bathroom looking at the tests for a bit before I went to break the news to my husband.

How I Told the Husband & Family

This time there was no surprise or creative way to tell my husband -- I literally walked out of the bathroom and stated "we're pregnant." He was pretty taken aback and didn't believe me until I showed him the positive tests. After the proof was brought to the table and he realized that this was not a drill, he was pretty happy.

I bought Felix a "This Is What An Awesome Brother Looks Like" t-shirt which he wore when he visited our parents and that's how we announced it to our families. Both our families were just as surprised as we were to find out that we were expecting.

The Pregnancy

Being pregnant with Marcus was a blur. It felt like forever, but the months really did fly by -- if that makes sense. This time around, I had an easier pregnancy which means there was no high blood pressure, no UTIs, no complications and no visiting the doctor's office a million times. I was busy chasing around Felix which made this time harder, but the pregnancy itself was a normal, easy pregnancy (as if an "easy pregnancy" even exists).

I did have a serious sinus infection accompanied by the flu when I was 5 months pregnant (read about my experience with that HERE) and that was pretty brutal since I didn't take any medication. I did get through it and I think that was the most eventful thing during my pregnancy up until 7 months when sleeping through the night became non existent.

Towards the end of the pregnancy, I was miserable. Everything hurt earlier than it did with Felix. I wasn't as tired as I was when I carried Felix, but I still felt pretty tired most of the time. I honestly don't remember much about the pregnancy besides feeling miserable towards the end because I felt so occupied with Felix -- having a toddler and not having the time to focus on the fact that you're going to give birth eventually really made this time around so different.

I didn't take very many bump photos this time around either because I felt so big, but here are some of the ones I did take -- mostly shared on my instastory.

Labor + Birth

At 35 weeks, on a Friday, I had a doctor appointment to check on baby's progress and to my surprise, baby was already head down, I was 3 centimeters and 80% effaced. She announced that baby could come any minute now even though I still had a month to go. My doctor did tell me that if I went into labor before 36 weeks, the hospital I was registered at would transfer me because they don't deliver  late term premature babies unless the mom was 6 cm dilated when she comes in.

After I left the doctor's office, I quickly went to finish packing my hospital bag. Come Saturday, I had contractions off and on all day, but nothing close enough together to be able call in. I went to bed around 12:30 a.m. and right as I crawled in bed I heard a POP! and felt a pressure like I had to pee, so I rushed to the bathroom. Right as I stepped in the bathroom, a gush of fluid poured onto the floor -- you, guys... my water broke and it was exactly like it happens in the movies. I called the doctor's office and explained what had just happened and she told me to come it.

Because I was spending the night at my parent's house, Felix was already accounted for and my brother was able to drive me to the hospital since my husband was at work. I got to the hospital around one and by then my contractions were about 3 minutes apart and labor was in full throttle mode.

The nurse confirmed that my water broke and called my doctor as my husband arrived. They were rushing to get everything ready because I had walked in 6 cm dilated and they had no time to transfer me to another hospital -- ironically Marcus had listened to doctors orders on Friday and my doctor thought that was the funniest thing.

The preparations did not go smoothly this time around -- the nurses tending to me had some new equipment and ended up poking me a total of five times before actually finding a vein for the I.V. which made me furious because it looked like I wasn't going to get an epidural. Usually, I am a very pleasant person, but I felt like flipping the table over because it was taking so long and my contractions were getting stronger and stronger. My husband said I looked like I was going to hit one of them and that he's never seen me that angry. It was brutal.

The anesthesiologist stepped in, found a vein quickly, and then went to give me the epidural right before I completely lost my cool -- talk about life saver. I was 8 cm dilated and finally found some relief. It took a total of 10 minutes after the epidural kicked in that I felt a pressure and the doctor announced that baby was coming!

It took me a total of 10 minutes to push Marcus out and then, just like that, there he was -- my sweet little baby boy. Born at 3:29 a.m. 6 lb. 2 oz. on April 29th.

Because Marcus was considered a "late term" premature baby, we had to stay two days in the hospital. The nurses were testing his glucose levels every two to four hours and each time, it was low.  He also wasn't very interested in nursing, so we started supplementing with formula. In addition to that, he also had jaundice, so they kept a close eye on that too.

He was pricked in the heel so many times that to this day, he has marks. Luckily for us, his glucose levels stabilized and I was discharged on time. His jaundice required us to visit the pediatrician a few times the first week, but everything turned out okay and baby was growing at a good rate and his jaundice levels were in the "safe zone" and declining with every visit.

Thinking Back

The pregnancy, labor and birthing process was a lot smoother than it was with Felix and this time around, it felt super rushed. I barely had time to breathe. I only gained 5 pounds this time around and since I'm 8 weeks and have gotten the a-okay from my doctor, I am on the road to getting my pre-babies body back!

All in all, life is definitely much sweeter with Marcus in it and we feel extremely blessed to be parents to such a precious baby --  all of us are so in love with him and are loving being a family of four!

Dear Momma

It's Mother's Day weekend, so naturally, I wanted to dedicate a post to my very own mama -- the epitome of strength, dignity and love. I thought I'd do this by writing a letter to the woman I admire most.

-----------

Dear Momma,

On this Mother's Day, I wanted to acknowledge what so many of us forget -- your constant sacrifice.

You always put your family first, no matter the situation or circumstance. And for that I thank you.

As the mother of seven children, I know it wasn't always easy. You did the best you could, and I know that we didn't always cherish that. I admit that even today, there are many times when all of us take you for granted.

Looking back on my childhood, I remember you as super woman. You ran a business that you poured your heart into and did what not very many people would do -- take care of the elderly in your own home. You treated them with such kindness and respect. I always felt that our residents were part of our family because you treated them like they were no less. It is because of you that I learned to respect and love others even when they make it hard. You always taught us that showing humbleness and humanity is one of the most important things to offer in a dark world.

You always had a hot meal on the table, tended to everyone's demanding needs and still managed to make time for all seven of us. Some of my favorite memories consist of you knocking at my door at 10:30 pm, after you tucked everyone else in, to chat with me. I know you were tired and the fact that you chose to spend quality time with your eldest daughter instead of going to sleep speaks volumes about the kind of mother you are.

The sacrifices you've made throughout the years have not gone unnoticed. I know that you had very limited time to spend on yourself -- most of which you dedicated to us. You made sure that we knew you loved us and that we could come to you with anything.

I want to end this letter by thanking you -- for loving us, for tolerating us, and for praying for us. I remember walking into the room and seeing you on your knees with tears streaming down your face as you asked the Lord to watch over your children. I always admired your faithful nature and how passionate you were about teaching us about His love and promises.

You're an exceptional mother and the best grandmother to my sweet Felix. We love you for all you do.

Check In | 24 weeks + Baby's First Easter

It's time for a check in! I cannot believe I've had my little guy around for 24 weeks. He'll be 6 months next week -- seriously?! Where has the time gone?! It feels like just yesterday I was quickly rushing to the hospital because I thought my back was going to break from the labor pains. Now he's this big boy, filling mommy and daddy's life with so much joy!

Felix is such a happy babe. The little man loves watching children and watching home videos of himself. He has all the heart eyes for daddy, but he also needs some serious mommy cuddles. He usually sleeps through the night, waking mom and dad up only once, but since teething has gone full throttle on us, we're waking up at least two times a night to a fussy babe.

Felix was also sick for the first time every time in these past 12 weeks and that was scary for mom and dad. He took the sickness and visiting the doctor 3 times in the span of a week like a champ.

My little guy is a super active baby, always wanting attention and to play! We're no longer taking multiple long naps during the day -- just two: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The rest of the day, momma is alternating us between activities because baby gets bored quickly. We've also gone from hating bath time to loooooving bath time, and that make mama very happy.

Milestones

Can Roll Over.
Two Teeth -- on the bottom
Eating Solid Food.

Baby Talk -- Sounds like "buh" and "tah."

Can Grab Toy & Pick It Up.
Running Around In His Walker.
Sleeps On His Own.
Doesn't Normally Feed At Night.

Since the last check in post at 12 weeks (read it here), I've observed two things:

1. How Fast Babies Grow. I feel like this one hit me like a bag of bricks. I don't know what it is, but  every morning when I go to pick up my little guy, he looks so much bigger and more mature than when I put him to bed last night! Little man is just growing way to fast. It's really bittersweet.

2. How Much Baby Needs Mom + Dad. This one seems like a given, but hear me out. Babies are so smart. They know and feel the vibes in the home. Felix picks up on everything. My husband works a 32 hour shift during the weekend and the way his eyes light up when he sees daddy is just melts me -- it's like "oh, hey, you're home, and I'm so happy about it" type of look. When my husband isn't home, he's always eyeing the door. Little man is always wanting to play and be loved by mom and dad. It's just the cutest thing when those little hands grab your face (or in dad's case, beard) and he comes in for a snuggle or slobbery kiss. He's our personal little teddy bear.

---

First Easter: We ended up not going to the Easter Morning (or Evening) service at church because Felix was not feeling very well due to teething. He had barely slept at night and didn't take a nap until 4, so I wasn't going to take a fussy little to church. We did go to the Last Supper service on Thursday that week and Felix was such a good baby, I was so impressed with how well behaved he was. As for his first Easter, we didn't do very much. Our families aren't really into Easter baskets and all that jazz, so we had a nice family lunch and that was about it. I can't wait until next year though, hopefully spring will come faster and we can take pretty scenic spring pictures for Easter!

Here are some pictures from the last 12 weeks of my little sweet Felix Eli:

Husband Appreciation Post

It's Valentines Day!
I hope you're having a great day and being showered with lots of love.
My husband and I don't really do Valentine's Day.
We have this "everyday is a day I'll show you my love" type of attitude,
which means we usually don't make a very big deal out of February 14th.
Last year was our first valentine's day as a married couple,
so I framed some wedding pictures for him
This year, I'm dedicating an entire post to the man of my dreams,
and taking this opportunity to brag on my man.
---
He usually checks up on my blog from time to time,
so I hope that when he stumbles upon this post,
he is pleasantly surprised.

10 Things I Love About My Husband:

[ 1. ] His Constant Desire To Put God First. I find this to be one of my favorite things about him because he's fulfilling his biblical role as the head of the house and that in itself makes me a very happy wife. I have also found it to be very grounding and humbling when he speaks about thanking God for everything. When life gets busy, it's good to have someone remind you that God is in control. It's great to see the man of your dreams fulfilling his God given purpose and not abusing his role.

[ 2. ] His Kind and Caring Heart. Ladies, to have someone be there for you with a tender heart is probably the sweetest thing you'll ever experience. Some of the sweetest moments in marriage are when you see your significant other go out of their way to do the littlest of things. An example of this would be when I was enduring the last few months of my pregnancy, it became extremely difficult to get dressed as I was huge and struggling to bend. Because I consider myself extremely independent, when it came time to tie my shoes or put socks on, I'd rather struggle than ask for help. Whenever my sweet husband saw my struggle, he'd quickly run over and insist on helping me. I found that to be the most adorable thing even though it was just a small gesture. The way he cares for me makes my heart melt, but more than that is the fact that he's not afraid to show that he cares -- he really does go above and beyond. swoon.

[ 3. ] His Voice. One of my favorite things is listening to my husband speak. Whether he's talking to me about his day or explaining something -- his voice is so soothing. I don't know what it is, but I've always just loved listening to him speak!

[ 4. ] The Way He Loves Our Son. One of the greatest things after having a baby is watching your husband love on the little human you created. I love seeing Felix's face light up at the sight of daddy and I love it so much more when I see my husband reciprocating that same excitement.

[ 5. ] How He Loves Me At My Worst. I'll admit, I'm an imperfect human -- I can be stubborn, difficult and unreasonable at times. Even so, my husband loves me anyway and that's a really great feeling. Knowing that your significant other will love you at all times, no matter the season or trial you're enduring gives such security and brings about a trust that is truly wonderful!

[ 6. ] That I Can Count On Him For Everything. I find that this is something came with time, but once it arrived, it was a wonderful realization. We went through a miscarriage before I got pregnant with Felix and that forced us to lean on each other as we dealt with the grief and aftermath of losing our first baby. It was during those very moments of undergoing troubled waters that I saw the man I marry become a pillar I could lean on, a support system that was there for me no matter the circumstance, at my darkest hour with my ugliest cry.

[ 7. ] His Infectious Smile. My husband has the prettiest pearly whites you've ever seen. He is a super smiley person which rubs off on you -- whether you want it to or not.

[ 8. ] His Sense of Humor. This a love/hate relationship type of thing because while I love joking around with him, sometimes I find that I can get irritated (it's just a wife thing right? getting cranky at always being teased by your husband...). However, at the end of the day, we always manage to laugh together and at each other and I love how easy going he is. No one can make me laugh like this man can.

[ 9. ] His Determination to Provide for His Family. There's nothing more attractive than a handsome man going through everything necessary to make sure his family is provided for! Whether it means taking on two jobs or volunteering to watch the baby so I can get a few extra hours of sleep -- my husband is willing to do it all. I'm very thankful for him, his determination, and his attitude about helping out around the house even though he works!

[ 10. ] That He Chose Me. I've had many people tell me how lucky I am to have him as a husband and I cannot contest that. I am extremely blessed to have him as my husband -- to get to spend this earthly life with him and by his side is probably one of my favorite things about this life. I truly have found the one who my soul loves and am one very happy lady because of it.

---

I decided to stop at 10 because this post could go on and on,
but you get the point I'm trying to make:
I adore my husband.
---
Florin,
if you're reading this:
I hope you know how much I love you.
Felix and I are blessed by your presence each day.
We wouldn't trade you for anyone.
ever.

Felix :: Pregnancy + Labor Story

I was browsing some folders in my lap top earlier this week and I found some pictures of newborn Felix in the hospital. As I browsed through them, I started walking down memory lane and reminiscing about carrying Felix and awaiting his arrival. Since I started this blog in December (almost two months after my precious babe was born), I never got to share the joys and pains of pregnancy with my little blogging community. Since today is my birthday, I thought I'd share my little one's "birth" story -- its better late than never, right?

Here's my  [ pregnancy + labor ] story as I remember it.

How I Found Out:
I found out I was pregnant last March. I had been feeling very tired during the day and it was getting to the point where I couldn't get out of bed until 11 am. I was struggling to wake up for work and I missed a few days because of it (luckily, I worked for my mom and she didn't fire me!), but even on the days I made it on time, I was so sluggish and I could barely function. So, on March 11, I woke up thinking about the two unused pregnancy tests I had tucked away in my sock drawer. I contemplated whether I should take one, but opted to go make breakfast instead. As I opened the fridge and looked inside hoping to distract myself with a meal, the very thought of food was repulsive and made me want to gag. I went back to the bedroom and sat on my bed eyeing the sock drawer and thinking about why I felt so sick for what could have been at least 15 minutes.  I decided to take a test just because -- I wasn't feeling myself, but I was 101% sure I wasn't pregnant.

I peed on the stick and waited patiently for the words "not pregnant" to appear.  Since I was convinced that there was no way I was pregnant, I felt like this was wasting a test which happen to be quite expensive. Five minutes had passed and I slowly leaned in to read.... PREGNANT.

I didn't believe it -- how could I be pregnant, I was just reeling from the emotional roller coaster of losing our first baby last November,  and I was definitely NOT pregnant. I ran to my room, grabbed the second pregnancy test and took it -- only to read PREGNANT again.

Reaction:
When it finally hit me that I actually was pregnant, I didn't know how to react. Part of me was overjoyed, but part of me was worried. I had suffered from a miscarriage three months prior and I wasn't sure I could carry to full term. There was no medical reason for that fear, but when you lose your first baby, those kind of fears take root in your mind and it's hard to shake them. While I had mixed emotions about having a baby, I started to brainstorm how I would tell Florin.

How I Told My Husband:
I didn't actually tell him face to face. Florin worked several jobs last year and sometimes we would sleep at my parents house. It was half way between our home and his jobs, so when I had to work at my parent's house the following day, we'd just meet there instead of making him drive all the way home for one night -- the day I found out I was pregnant was one of those days. Florin had asked me to bring him some clean clothes, so I strategically placed the pregnancy between his shirt and pants in a bag. The evening rolled around and we were at my parents house, and he asked me if I brought the clothes, to which I replied yes and gave him the bag. About 15 minutes later, he came out of the guest bedroom with the test in his hand and asked me what it was. I told him it was a pregnancy test, to which he replied, "you're pregnant?" in sort of a surprised and confused tone. I said yes and he left without saying a word. I followed him to see what was the matter -- he was just taken aback with the news, but was overjoyed at the news.

The Pregnancy:
After I told Florin, we both shared the feeling of not wanting to get our hopes up just in case it would be a repeat of last time. We told our parents, siblings and a few close friends the good news, but we wanted to wait until the 2nd trimester to announce it to the rest of the world.

The first trimester was brutal. I just couldn't eat anything. The thought of food was repulsive and I honestly would gag the moment anything touched my tongue. I threw up a total of two times, but that number would have been much higher had I eaten. I spent my days eating crackers, bananas, and drinking Gatorade. I lost 10 pounds the first 3 months of my pregnancy. Another aspect of the first trimester was the constant state of sleepiness. I honest felt like dropping down and taking a nap every 3 to 4 hours -- if dropping down meant sleeping on concrete I was tired enough that it sounded desirable.

During the early months of my pregnancy, I found myself without medical insurance and I didn't visit the doctor until I was 7 months pregnant. I had applied to our state's program, and was waiting for a response. During my
first trimester, I ended up visiting a pregnancy resource center in April to get my pregnancy validated, so I could send the results to the insurance in hopes that they'd process my paperwork. Going into the center, I was a bit embarrassed because I wasn't in need of much help and I wanted to keep my baby, so I sort of felt like I was wasting their resources. When I walked in I was the only person besides the staff, so that made me feel a bit better. The people there were so friendly and helpful -- they gave me a test and it confirmed that I was pregnant to which they offered a free ultrasound to further validate the pregnancy. Seeing my baby, for the first time on the screen was probably one of the most memorable moments of my life -- there was my little babe at 13 weeks with a strong heartbeat and thrusting around those little stubs that would soon form into precious little hands and feet. I was in love.  I then announced that was expecting a little bundle late May via social media.

Once the second trimester rolled around, I was full of energy and starving! I was tired of just staying in bed all day and had this crazy appetite for fruits, veggies and rice crackers. I finally resolved the medical insurance issues in late June, but when I went to make an appointment with my OBGYN, the only opening they had was a month out. A cousin of mine told me about private ultrasound clinics that held sessions to find out the gender, so I quickly found one near me and made an appointment. Everyone that saw me and my growing belly told me that based on my shape, I was going to have a baby girl and I was just so curious! My husband and I went into that appointment thinking we were going to have a little girl, but we left with the pleasant knowledge that a little boy would soon be gracing our lives.

I didn't go out much during the second trimester because it was summer and I couldn't stand the heat. Every time I went in weather that was higher that 80 degrees, I'd feel like I couldn't breathe. I stopped working around 6 months and spent my days inside next to the air conditioner.

When the third trimester arrived, it brought back the waves of sleepiness -- only this time I had to sleep. I couldn't keep myself awake anymore. I would sit down on the couch or on my bed which would then result in crashing for two or more hours at a time. I was so tired all the time and everything started to hurt around seven and a half months. My little nugget was already head down, pressing on my cervix and I had 2 more months to go! As the days went on, it got harder to walk because of the pain and I started to get so much acid reflux that I couldn't sleep at night. It was the most uncomfortable I've ever been. To add to the pain, my little guy was a kicker and by that I mean that whenever he kicked, I felt like my abdomen was about to burst. You could see the kicks move my belly almost always and he was moving all night long. If that wasn't enough, around the same time I found out Felix was head down, my body decided to throw in some Braxton Hicks contractions -- I felt like a complete mess!

I recently found this picture on my computer, exactly a week before I gave birth, passed out before 9 pm.
😂 I have NO idea when he took this -- it cracks me up.
I also had a preclampsia and high blood pressure scare. We were having a prolonged summer and the heat would raise my blood pressure into a troublesome zone. The doctors at the clinic labeled me a "high risk pregnancy" and since my due date was November 15th, they decided that they wanted to monitor my blood pressure and the baby's heart rate. My primary doctor eventually had me going to her office for a stress test twice a week -- which was where I get hooked up to a machine that measures my contractions and the baby's heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes. By the end of my pregnancy, everyone in the office knew me by first name basis since I was there what seemed like every other day.

Labor + Birth
I woke up on October 25 at 3 am with a really dull, but persistent backache. I tried shifting the mountain of pillows I was sleeping on in order to get more comfortable and went back to sleep. I woke up at 7 am with the same persisting pain. I made breakfast for Florin and then saw him off to work around 1:30 pm and ended up having my best friend Diana come and visit me. We chatted for about 2 hours,  but as I sat on the couch the pain was getting worse and worse. When she left around 4 pm, I went straight to bed. I woke up at 6:30 pm with what had to be the worst back pain I had ever felt in my life. I went to the bathroom to pee and noticed that I wiped a little bit of blood.

Trying not to panic, I told myself it must be nothing and tried to go back to bed. I couldn't sleep, so I started to time the sudden streaks of pain in my lower back. I was having one every 7 minutes. I went to the bathroom again only to wipe even more blood -- I started to get nervous. I called the clinic and was told that there probably wasn't anything wrong, but because this was my first baby, they just wanted to check me out. I called Florin and told him that the doctor wanted to see me and he rushed home. By the time he got home, I was having those streams of pain in my back every 5 minutes and it was getting hard to walk. Florin came home, helped me get into the car and we were off. The hospital I went to had their birthing unit away from the main entrance, so we had to park the car and walk to the door -- I thought I was going to have the baby on the sidewalk the pain was so strong!

I finally made it inside and checked in at 8:30 pm. They showed me the room I was to be in and had me get into a hospital gown. She checked to see if I was dilated and I was -- 3 inches. She announced that tonight was baby night. She explained that the pain I was experiencing in my back was "back labor," and that some women get contractions in their back instead of their abdomen. She called the doctor and he said he was on his way.

The doctor that came in to deliver my baby wasn't my primary OBGYN because it was her night off. The doctor my husband really liked was on call which made him happy. I had seen Dr. Yanke a couple of times during a stress test, so he wasn't a complete stranger. During my pregnancy, I felt really odd about a male delivering my baby, but when the time came, I didn't care who did it, I just wanted my baby out, so when he arrived I was more than happy to see a familiar face.

Contractions were coming every 2 minutes and I felt like my back was going to break, so Dr. Yanke okayed the epidural and around 10:30 pm I got the shot. The process was smooth and the results were amazing. I could feel my abdomen tighten, but the pain was gone -- I was so relieved. Thus the waiting game began.

The nurse would come in every hour to check how far I was dilated.  Around 2 am, the nurse and doctor noticed that I stopped at 5 cm and wasn't dilating anymore, so they pumped me with some synthetic hormone to get the contractions going even more. I spent another 3 hours laying in bed, dozing off and on, until I felt an immense pressure and had the nurse get the doctor.

Alas, my baby was making an entrance into the world. Labor was definitely harder than I anticipated and I thought it was going to be pretty hard. Pushing a child out of your body seemed almost impossible. Felix was coming out transverse, so it made pushing him out harder. I pushed for about 45 minutes until Felix was completely out on October 26 at 5:43 am. It was insane. About 5 minutes before he was born, I was ready to tell the doctor to cut me open because at this rate the kid was never going to come out. They have you push in segments of three and you're supposed to hold your breath. By the third push, I couldn't even breathe so I'd let it out. The doctor encourages you to push, and tells you to push like you did last time, but in my eyes, I was pushing the same the whole entire time! It was just hard, but he did finally come out -- and that's the important part!

Felix didn't cry much when he came into the world, just whimpered. When they placed him on my chest, I was so relieved that he was out, and so tired from 8 hours of labor and 45 minutes of pushing. It didn't really hit me that I had a baby until about 8 am and from that moment on, I couldn't get enough of him!

He came into the world weighing about 7 pounds and 2 ounces and was about 21 inches long -- a skinny, long baby boy. He had the sweetest cheeks and a head full of hair (all that heart burn was not in vain, praise jesus). He had the softest skin and the longest fingers I've ever seen. He was absolutely perfect. The nurses were telling me that he was becoming a hospital favorite because he was so tiny and sweet and I couldn't have agreed more!

I  know ever parent feels like this, but it was love at first sight. I honestly felt like I had the cutest baby in the world. Every discomfort that pregnancy and labor brought was quickly washed away as I spent time with my little babe. Having a child really shows you a love that you've never felt before.

We spent two days in the hospital because I had a bacteria in my system that could have been potentially   dangerous for the baby, and they wanted to monitor us for at least two days. Everything turned out fine and we got to go home on the 27th and begin life at home with the sweetest little man who happened to be ours. We were so excited to go home and start our lives!

Thinking Back:
If I have any regrets -- it's not taking more pictures of my baby bump. While pregnant, I felt like such a WHALE (I had gained about 40 pounds by the end of it all) and since the camera adds 10 pounds, I didn't want that documented. I avoided the camera at all times. The very few pictures I have are shot that were taken when I wasn't paying attention at a family gathering or outing. People told me that this was a regret of theirs, but I didn't listen and now I am reaping the consequences. It's not a major thing, but it would have been nice to have a few more pictures. Next time I suppose!

Annnnnnd, that my friends is my [ pregnancy + labor ] story as I remember it. Truth be told, I thought that pregnancy and labor were probably one of the hardest things I've ever done, but in the end, you realize it's so worth it.  I would do it all over again (and I probably will!) The journey is long, and sometimes tedious, but oh the joy it brings. I look at Felix and I just have such an immense love and joy when I see him, it's like nothing I've ever known. I'm always thinking about we now have this precious little baby who makes everything in this life so much sweeter. As a person of faith, I feel like having a baby puts into perspective how much God loves us. It's the most incredible, heart warming feeling!
