Why We Don't Celebrate Spooky Season

The other day I posted a mini blurb on Instagram on why we don't celebrate spooky season + hallowen as a family. Upon posting this, I knew that it could rub some people the wrong -- and it did. My follower count dropped by 500 people and it's still going down. I am perfectly okay with this as I promised myself that I would be sharing more of Him on the gram. I knew going in that this was an unpopular opinion, but I felt that the Spirit led me to share, so I drafted and I wanted to do so in a respectful manner + tone.

While there was some pushback, I was surprised at how many people (believers and non-religious) agreed or wanted to share their perspectives on the matter. I was overjoyed when the majority of people commenting did so in a respectful way. I am an avid encourager of civil discourse, so I am thankful to find and meet like-minded people on the web.

So that leads me to what this blog post is meant to be -- I thought I'd write up a blog post with a follow-up addressing the points that came up multiple times in the comments in case anyone wants a cleaner reference point without having to muddle through them.

The Actual Post

First, I want to share the post in its entirety. It was a simple post with a statement of personal convictions + reasonings that we hold. Like I mentioned in the post, we are avid lovers of the autumn season, but because we hold dear His message of life and light, we cannot in good faith celebrate a holiday that invites darkness in.

The Response

I'm just going to dive right into what I ran into when people commented -- inserting a little note here that I'll mostly list questions and rebuttals but am so grateful for those of you who commented in support, that you feel the same, encouraged me with your words and those of you who pitched in on other's people questions and comments. I truly appreciate each and every one of you.

The History :: Pagan Roots + All Hallow's Eve

This was a topic that came up a lot. I am pretty well versed in the history of this holiday as I like to read all about history and culture.  I'll give a quick run-through of each of these for those of you who would like to know more about the history.

Pagan Roots

Celtic culture has an ancient autumn festival called Samhain. This festival marked the end of summer and the start of the "darker" part of the year -- basically autumn + winter when the weather gets harsh. It's also good to know that October 31st was also the last day of their calendar year and was their new year's eve. The Celtics believed that on the last day of the year, the line between the spiritual realm + earth was blurred.

They believed that ghosts return to earth this day, cause damage to crops and trouble. In addition, they thought that the spirits walking on the earth gave Celtic priests a better capability + accuracy when it came to fortune-telling.

In short, would make large fires, collect the rest of the harvest, and then sacrifice cattle. They would then proceed to take some of the fire from the ceremony home to light their hearth. Some Celtics would dress up as animals and monsters this night to scare + discourage the spirits from kidnapping them.

As history progressed, so did the holiday. People started making food to offer to the spirits and offer their dead visitors updates on what had been happening on earth. Children were not absent from the progression and started to play games to entertain the spirits visiting. Kids would go door to door and sing songs for the dead and they got cakes as payment for it.

All Hallow's Eve

In the 5th century, the pope tried to claim it as a Christian holiday and moved the celebration to May 13th. He dedicated it to celebrating + honoring martyrs and saints. In the 9th century, the pope moved it back to autumn deeming Nov. 1st as all saint's day and Nov. 2nd as all soul's day. It is at this point in history where the justification for why Christians can and should celebrate comes from.

It should be noted that Pope declaring it as a new holiday with a more Christian purpose does not wash clean its pagan roots. Samhain did not stop being celebrated with this announcement either. It actually contained the same pagan practices as giving food + flowers to the dead saints and martyrs.

My Take + Rebuttal

In short, halloween wasn't a thing until people started immigrating from places the Celtics lived and brought their traditions with them in the 19th century.

Before then, people in America had autumn festivals that surrounded around celebrating the bountiful harvest -- something I have no issue with and is something I focus on during the autumn season.  I love to tell my kids that October is a prequel to the thanksgiving season and a chance for us to look at how the seasons change, but He remains the same.

However, if we look at modern-day Halloween and what it has become, the pagan practices are still there with a few dark twists. I made a small table to parallel the purpose, what was worn on that day, and what is done on that day.

It seems that the original festival wanted to keep evil at bay and away while we have now opted to embrace the evil and spooky. This fact alone tells me that a believer should not partake in this holiday. If we hold fast to His message of light and life in all seasons, it would make sense that the one holiday that revels in partying in the dark would be a no-go for believers.

As for All Hallow's Eve, I have nothing to say about celebrating that because I am not Catholic or Orthodox. I was raised in a Pentecosal church -- one that was pretty low key and frowned upon theatrics. I grew up without celebrating saints or honoring martyrs on special calendar days. I have always been of the mindset that the only person that deserves our celebration and admiration is Christ alone.

What The Bible Says

1 Corinthians 10:21
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons.
You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons

Ephesians 6:11-12
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

1 Timothy 4:1
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.

When the Bible tells us that Jesus cast out demons and put on the armor of God to combat these spirits, it is a clear indication that we should not be dressing up as them or partaking in activities where these things are fully embraced and accepted as okay. God reminds us time and time again to be watchful because evil is lurking -- always looking for ways and opportunities to lead us astray.

Why Single Out Halloween when Christmas has Pagan roots?

I come across this statement often when expressing my views on Halloween and it's interesting because the people who tell me to live a little are also the ones wanting me to sit in a corner and not thump my Bible. I mean, really you guys make it make sense.

My Take + Rebuttal

First, let me just say that I know pagans used December 25th to celebrate the winter solstice. I know that the tree was meant to represent the return of life in nature and that the days would soon harbor more light. I know these things and I still celebrate Christmas -- shocker.

Even more of a shocker is that it doesn't make me a hypocrite that I opt into Christmas + opt-out of Halloween and I'll explain why...  Jesus embarked in this life to change hearts and give man eternal hope -- even the gentiles and pagans! Because of this, we take His message of life and love to all things and seasons including Christmas. Just like He gave our lives new meaning, we are also allowed to give new meaning to holidays -- this view is complex which is why a more detailed post about this is coming soon!

When it comes to Halloween, we opt out because I cannot give it new meaning as it is fully claimed by darkness. It glorifies death, witches, magic, and evil spirits. It promotes dressing immodestly. It glorifies everything that God tells us is not good and to stay away from. However, I can shine God's light on this day by showing my children that while the world gets ghoulish, we stand firm together and refuse to partake in such activities.  We stand firm in our convictions on Halloween by showing our children that is okay to be different from the world.

Do Your Children Feel Left Out + Depriving Them of Fun

I've been told that I deprive my children of a fun time by not choosing to celebrate this dark holiday. I find this funny because I do not need a day to have fun -- we have fun all year long. We play pretend + dress up and we eat candy + treats almost every day, so really halloween does nothing for us. It's really that simple.

Like I said in my original post, we do other things like:

𓍊  visit a local pumpkin patch
𓍊  learn about God's purpose for bats + spiders
𓍊  pick apples
𓍊  walk through the forest and admire autumn colors
𓍊  seasonal crafts + activities
𓍊  bake fun treats together
𓍊  read stories about harvest
𓍊  go on hayrides
𓍊  visit a corn maze
𓍊  hunt for seasonal treasures like acorns
𓍊  perform skits of woodland animals preparing for winter
𓍊  decorate the home with leaves and multiple gourds, squash and pumpkins
𓍊  read about how the season of the harvest was approached throughout history
𓍊  talk about how seasons change in nature and in life with the emphasis on Him being a constant
𓍊  focus on the blessings

.. honestly, there are so many fun + wonderful things to do this season with your children! You don't need a day or any spookiness involved to have fun.

You Are Teaching Them To Be Fearful + Shelter Them

This one honestly irritates me the most --- because it's rude. I don't have much to say about this question as I find that people who say this are low key shaming me for my beliefs and that's not something I need to be focusing on.

My Take + Rebuttal

Because it is normal that their gut reaction is to be afraid of scary things, I affirm the fact that their initial reaction is valid and assure them that they are secure in Christ -- that they do not need to be afraid because Jesus will always protect them from the scary stuff.

My toddler sons don't want anything to do with Halloween because they know Jesus is good and they have the ability to sense that the spooky + scary things are not. I've noticed that it is often adults who validate this holiday by comforting children with the assurance that it is all in good fun if they're scared.

As for sheltering children, it's my job to ensure that they are happy and healthy, so if that means not letting them go dress up to ask candy from strangers, so be it. People commenting things like this are stating their opinions and they are entitled to them. On the same note, I don't have to bear any weight of those words as my judgment doesn't come from the world and a stranger's opinion. My convictions are what they are and I will stand by them.

Conclusion

In short, stand by your convictions people! You really don't have to explain your reasoning or convictions about not celebrating halloween to anyone if you don't want to. I know some people who oppose this view can be nasty about it and it's a real shame.

Don't be pressed to celebrate it because everyone is doing it or from the fear that your kids are bing left out / missing out on the experience. When I was a kid, I only felt that way at school when kids talked about how much fun they had, but that only lasted a milisecond as I was having fun in my own way all while focusing on the autumn season.

So, there you have it -- my take on spooky season. It's not a popular opinion and I am more than okay with that.

Spring Cleaning 101 [ + Checklist ]

+++ This post is sponsored by Opendoor. All opinions are my own +++

I'm 35 weeks pregnant, so nesting during spring has been more than ideal. It's made the act of spring cleaning a breeze -- and by that, I mean that I nagged my poor husband to death until he finally agreed to help with the process. Bless his heart, he spent most of his spring break off from nursing school doing all the tedious tasks I could think of!

I don't know how it happens, but every year during spring, I find myself having to declutter + rearrange furniture and closets. It's gotten so much worse as we've added more kids into the picture. Thankfully, we've nearly finished and I feel very satisfied with the fact that I've taken every inch of my home and disinfected it.

While the spring cleaning indoors is done, I have quite a few things that I still have to do outside -- things like washing the windows, pulling weeds around the house, cleaning the gutters, etc. I am so pregnant and since my husband is in school again, we'll be tackling these tasks slowly on the weekends and in the spare time we can find in our hectic schedules.

Our Spring Cleaning Routine [ + freebie printable ]

Here is a thorough list of things that we did to spruce and disinfect our home + some of the things we still need to do.

Before we start I just want to issue a warning / mini disclaimer -- I grew up with a very Romanian mom & dad, both of whom were super particular when it came to cleaning, so if this list seems exaggerated, sorry not sorry.

I do this regime at least twice a year and when we do it, it's intense. If my parents instilled one thing in me, it's that a clean organized house equates to a clean, organized life. I would always mumble and grumble during the boot camp type cleaning sessions when I was a kid, but now that I have my own home, nothing feels better than walking into a house that has been thoroughly scrubbed down from top to bottom.

At the end of this novel of a post (hey now, it's a crash course, what did you expect?),  I've compiled all of these tasks on a sheet that you can print yourself and hang on your fridge just in case you want to tackle some spring cleaning on your own. Refer back to this post for more details, but hopefully, this mini checklist can get you in the spring cleaning spirit!

So now, without further ado -- here are the tasks that I attempt to tackle during spring cleaning week!

Indoor Tasks

❏  Dusting + Wiping Down Shelves / Furniture :: this is one of the things that we do every week at our house, but I really love adding it to the spring cleaning list as well because dust settles faster than you can blink.

❏  Dusting + Washing Walls, Ceilings & Moldings / Trims :: I feel like this should be done twice a year. Once in the late fall and then again in the spring. I dust all corners of the ceiling and near the light fixtures and then I wiped down the walls from top to bottom.

❏  Clean All Windows :: both inside and outside.

❏  Vacuuming Behind & Under Furniture :: dust accumulates everywhere especially behind heavy furniture. Spring cleaning week is the perfect time to move all the heavy stuff and vacuum + wash behind and under things that usually don't get moved throughout the year.

❏  Organizing Every Closet in the House :: this was a big project. My closets were all over the place as we didn't have many dressers. I took our storage closets and organized each shelf and grouped products like cleaning supplies together as well as kitchen supplies, soaps, handwashes, etc. I bought cubicles for our closets and used baskets to group socks, hats, and all other small items of clothing.

❏  Wash / Steam All Floors :: We recently bought a floor steamer to wash our floors and it's proving to be such a great tool -- especially during spring cleaning week! I love how clean all the floors look after using the steamer.

❏  Donating Clothes + Toys That We Don't Use :: this one is a chore that we have yet to finish because we haven't had the time to go through all our old clothes and toys, but I am slowly getting there.

❏  Get Rid of Expired Products :: this includes cans and stale food from our pantry and old makeup from my office / closet. I just threw them away if they were old, expired and used up since some products you can never fully use up before the expiration date.

❏  Disinfect Rugs :: I have shaggy rugs and don't have a carpet / rug cleaner, so I found a DIY recipe on Pinterest that was fairly quick and easy. All I had to do was sprinkle it on the rug and then vacuum it up in the morning before the boys woke up.

❏  Wash + Wipe Couches & Recliners  :: If you have couches with material coverings, go ahead and pop them in the washer. If they are leather, it's time to wipe them down.

❏  Change Air Filters + Clean Air Vents :: We do this every three months, but when you're getting the house all spruced up, it's always nice to have the old ones removed so the dust accumulated in the filter isn't being taken through the house.

❏  Wash Plush Toys + Sanitize Plastic Toys :: this is just to get the germs off toys as boys will be boys and my youngest likes to take everything to his mouth. Plus, clean toys give this mama piece of mind. After you've cleaned them, it's time to organize and sort them.

❏  Replaced Light Bulbs :: it's the perfect time to go check the lightbulbs in the house and replace them with the energy saving ones because why not?

Disinfect Sink :: I have an old white ceramic sink and if you don't disinfect that thing on a weekly basis, it gets gross, so I do this task quite often. However, for those of you who live in a newer home, I've heard that it's good to disinfect your sink -- wait for it... at least once a week, so let's get disinfecting.

❏  Wash All Bedding, Blankets & Pillows :: I love crawling into a fresh set of bedding. It's just so comforting, especially when the rest of your home is sparkling clean too.

❏  Clean Stove Top :: it's time for this gunky task. I'm not sure why, but I hate this task the most even though it's so simple.

❏  Deep Clean The Bathroom :: oh boy, this one is where you place the mask on and get working! I feel like this job is probably the most tedious because even though the space is small, there is so always so much to clean -- the sink, the drawers + cabinets, the shower, and tub, etc.

Wipe Down Refrigerator, Freezer & Microwave :: This is a great way to refresh the most used spaces in the kitchen. It's also a great time to go through the food you have and see if there is anything that needs to be thrown out.

Outdoor Tasks

❏  Weeding + Gardening :: this is what spring is all about, am I right? no time like the present to plant some flowers or spruce up your garden by planting some fresh produce that you can reap in the coming months. Getting rid of pesky weeds is also ideal for this time of year as the soil is moist from some rainy days.

❏  Clean Gutters :: fall and winter months are known to be gusty which means there are probably some leaves, twigs and other types of gunk stuck in your gutters -- now is time to clean those babies out.

❏  Patching Up Holes Around The House + Wobbly Fences :: keeping pesky rodents, animals and bugs out of your home and garden is something that everyone wants and the first step to making that happen is making sure you have no open holes or gaps for them to enter through.

❏  Pressure Wash Driveway, Patio, Etc :: mildew, moss, a bunch of unwanted dust and dirt have accumulated in the past months and now is the perfect time to get the job done.

❏  Clean Grill :: Every spring, we clean out the gunk on the grill and then pressure wash it after scrubbing the grill plates.

❏  Clean Window + Door Screens :: this will get rid of gunk, dirt and unwanted dead bugs that have landed and gotten stuck on your windows + screens.

❏  Wash Garbage & Compost / Yard Debris Cans :: this one is a task that I've always hated because it's gross, but after I finish, I am always relieved.

Don't Forget To Clean The Car

❏  Get Rid Of Junk + Trash :: all those gum wrappers, empty water bottles, etc.

❏  Wipe Everything Down :: steering wheel, leather seats, the dashboard, all the things! I have two little ones and there are milk splatters, footprints and all kinds of hand smudges on my seats and windows.

❏  Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum :: getting rid of all the dust and crumbs that have accumulated over the past few months makes me one happy lady.

Change Air Filter & Oil :: and any other car tune up (alignment, change tires + timing belt, check brakes, etc)  that you can think of should be done because you don't want any surprises later on in the year.

❏  Wash Exterior :: take your vehicle to a car wash or start scrubbing! nothing says put together more than a fresh, clean car.

7 Things To Do When You're Feeling Stressed Out

Sometimes life can get brutal with all the projects, tasks and commitments we assign to ourselves which I thought I'd share some ways you can combat stress when you're drowning in the pile of work or those pesky laundry baskets.

1. Stop & Re-Evaluate.

If you're feeling worn out, stop what you're doing for a few minutes and re-evaluate the situation. Is the stress worth it, is the way you're feeling helping the situation, and would you be accomplishing less if you weren't stressing out right now? More times than not, the answer to all these questions are no because stress is a distractor and a mere roadblock to success.

2. Breathe.

It wouldn't kill you to take a deep breath every now and again. No matter what is going on in that busy life of yours, it's always okay to take several moments to take a long deep breath. I always fine this an instant relaxer. I mean, breathing is something we take for granted, so why not take a few moments to really focus on how amazing our lungs are and fill those babies up with some air!

3. Take Time For Some Self Care.

It's always nice to know that later, you've got something rewarding waiting for you. Plan a staycation, a spa day or a nice chunk of time to do whatever makes you happy -- read a book, watch a movie, grab some coffee, go for a walk in a pretty park, or just grab some extra zzzz by taking a nap!

4. Eat Some Chocolate.

Because who has ever frowned while eating chocolate?! I mean honestly, I have never seen a person not smile when eating chocolate! Just remember to not go overboard because you may be frowning later when you step on the scale.

5. Make A Plan.

One of my favorite ways to combat stress is make a plan. I grab my calendar, my fancy pens, and I start planning and brainstorming on how to accomplish what I need to do in order for my task to be complete. I set up a timeline and then I commit to it.

6. Exercise.

When I'm stressed, exercise is often the very last thing I think about which is exactly why it's the perfect way to combat stress. It's a great way to release tension and just forget about what's going on. So grab some headphones, turn on some upbeat music and break a sweat and all the stress will drip away too

7. Start Over.

Sometimes we're stressed because things aren't going in the direction we want them too and to that I say -- okay, fine, let's start over and do it right. There's no shame in wiping the slate clean and starting fresh with the thoughts of what didn't work out last time in the back of our minds.

Couponing 101 :: A Crash Course

Over the past few months, I've noticed a few moms and ladies on social media asking about couponing and how it all works, so even though I'm not a couponing "expert" and I don't have all the answers, I have found a few ways to make what seems like an overwhelming task a bit simpler.

I started couponing right before my husband started nursing school because with school tuition and student loans, having to stay home with our toddler, and another baby on the way -- any penny saved makes all the difference.

The key to successful couponing is organization and researching before you go shopping. I cannot stress "before" enough. I don't know if it's just me, but the moment I'm pushing a cart in the store, it's like a wave of forgetfulness slams against my brain and thrusts every penny saving bone out of my body. The best way to combat this is being prepared, having a plan before you step inside of the store and staying focused.

Preparing At Home :: Tips & Tricks

Clipping Coupons -- the ones you get in the mail, find in magazines and see in the newspaperPersonally, I find this task rather tedious because it requires me to sit down with some scissors and really hunt for the things I need instead of being able to just write stuff down, but it's something that can be really helpful because a lot of times, there are some great deals hidden in what seems like a mumbo jumbo of items.

I find that clipping coupons with a cup of coffee or tea close by is helpful, turning on a podcast or some music you enjoy makes this process so much smoother! It's important to have time laid aside for this task because a screaming toddler or whiny baby can add unnecessary stress and give you the urge to finish faster. Making clipping coupons an enjoying "me time" type of task makes all the difference.

Keep A Coupon Pouch In Your Bag. I have an oversized pouch in my bag where I keep all my coupons, gift certificates and store member cards. It really helps to have everything that "saves me money" in one place.

Organize + Clean The Pouch Regularly -- get rid of expired coupons, paperclip coupons by store & department, etc. This is probably one of the most important things to do because it'll make the process of shopping so much easier if you already have everything grouped together. One of the things you don't want to do is be in the aisle of the supermarket and shuffling through 50 coupons.

Typically, I paperclip coupons by store, placing the coupons that will expire first towards the front. This way, I can make sure that I don't forget about them. I use sticky notes to label them and place it in the front of each stack.

At the beginning of each month or when adding new coupons to the stack, I quickly browse the coupons I already have and toss the ones that have expired.

Lists -- make them, love them, utilize them. I keep lists everywhere; seriously guys, I have lists E V E R Y W H E R E in the house (on my fridge, on my phone, by my desk, in my notes, attached to my planner, etc). I have lists for specific stores, for the types groceries I need to get and for things I want to buy in the future whether it be books, office supplies or home decor items, it's on a list.

I also duplicate my lists; I do this for two reasons -- seeing a list multiple times and on different devices / mediums helps me remember what I need and it ensures that if I forget one list, I have a back up. It's honestly super helpful if these lists can cross over from your computer and phone because that way if you leave the house, you still have the list with you and it prevents you from having to turn back when you're already half way to the store.

Something that reaaaaaally helps me is when I'm making my lists, I have my coupons nearby and then I add a symbol or a "C" to remind myself that I have a coupon for that item. This helps remind me to actually take my coupons out of my bag when I'm at the store because if I'm going to be honest, I tend to forget more often than not, especially when I have the little one with me.

Research -- research online before you go out to shop. Before going out to the store, make sure you sit down and do some research on the items you need to buy. I know that going to just one store and getting everything you need is so much easier than going to multiple stores, but if you do your research, you'll find that sometimes the savings are worth the extra drive.

Google the products you want and need and see where you can get it for the cheapest price, but make sure you take into account the weight / size of the product when doing so. I find that a lot of times, ordering my things online from specific sites that offer rewards or free products are worth more than making a trip to the store. I've listed some of my favorite apps and websites further down below to help you get started.

Make An Email Account Specifically for Coupons and Sign up for Brand / Store Newsletters. I did this on a whim one day because I was so tired of getting 100+ emails daily from stores and brands that mixed up with my more important emails. Let me just tell you, this has been a L I F E C H A N G E R for me. I now sign up for every brand email -- no shame! Brands and stores send special promotions and discount codes via email, so signing up in store or online when they ask is a must.

Before I go buy clothes or shoes, I just search for the stores I want to go to that day and see if they've sent out any coupons or additional discounts to what they already have in the store -- these are usually at the bottom of the email, so scroll all the way down! If I find something, I screenshot the barcode or coupon and head on out to the store! I screenshot because my phone signal tends to act up when I'm in the store, so I want to have it at my finger tips especially since my phone signal always tends to act up when there are what seems like a million people waiting in line behind me.

Online Shopping :: Helpful Apps & Websites

Here are some of the websites I utilize daily when I'm shopping online and searching for the best deals -- below each explanation, I've linked their sign up pages. I highly recommend using all these apps and websites because they really work and the savings start to add up if utilized correctly. One thing to keep in mind is that some of the cash back apps and sites do not double over, so make sure you look into what site has the best deal because sometimes one site will offer more cash back than the other.

No. 1 -  Ebates :: I love Ebates because you're literally getting cash back when you shop. I find that the best time to use this app is around the holidays and the week of black Friday because that's when they have the highest cash back rates plus the store's usual sales. What I really love about using Ebates is that they have an awesome feature / plugin that you install in your browser and each time you visit a store online, it'll remind you to enable cash back as well as see how much you'll be getting back percentage wise. If you're like me and suffer from mom brain, that reminder is really helpful. Ebates also allows you to link your card for in store cash back deals, but I've found that the best deals are when you shop online.

No. 2 - Ibotta :: Ibotta is a grocery cash back app. You get on the app, find offers and then go shopping. When you're done with your shopping then redeem your cash back by scanning your receipts and then get your cash back! It's that simple. You can also link your loyalty cards from stores and then Ibotta won't need a receipt if you've scanned the card at checkout. They give you a 10$ welcome bonus when you sign up, so that's a plus!

No. 3 - RetailMeNot :: is an app where you can get coupons, promo codes, see sales in your area and get gift cards. You can see deals by brand, stores, free shipping promotions,  and online + in store codes. If you shop online, they also have a cash back section which is nice. I use this site to start my online search usually -- to get a feel of what's the closest deal or if there are any great deals online that I haven't stumbled across yet.

No. 4 - Groupon :: I use Groupon when I'm planning a vacation or when I am looking to do something local because they often have awesome discounts to your favorite places to eat. I've found a few amazing places to grab a bite by just looking to see what promotions local restaurants are offering. They have deals on local spas, family fun centers, getaways, and car services. I also really love their deal of the day section because they have deals on literally everything! It's a great tool to utilize when you're in the mood to do something or go somewhere but don't want to spend a fortune!

No. 5 - Shopular :: This app is powered by Ebates and it's one of my all time favorites. Download it on your phone, make an account and then you pick your favorite stores, so when you go to the home screen, you get to see the best deals your favorite stores are offering! If you already have Ebates, all you have to do is login!

No. 6 - Checkout 51 :: this app works exactly like Ibotta and is specifically for groceries. All you do is create an account, browse deals, shop, and then redeem your deals by uploading a receipt. Super easy and simple way to earn cash back.

No. 7 - Coupon.com :: This site has coupons that you can print out -- mostly grocery store coupons, but you can also find for clothing and home brands. I love that you can "clip" them by adding them to your list and you have the option to print them out when you're done. It's a good place to look when you're compiling a shopping list because you can find some great coupons and they really do amount to saving more than just a few bucks if you utilize it.

No. 8 - SlickDeals :: like it's title, this site is a contemplation of "slick" deals found on the internet. My husband always checks this site before we go and make a big purchase on electronics or home items because they also have deal ratings / reviews from people that have used that deal. It's a great place to browse deals and get second opinions!

No. 9 - Grove Collaborative :: One of my favorite places to utilize on the internet because it promotes healthy living as well as saving money. The Grove Collaborative sells all natural, chemical free cleaning, self care and home products. It's a subscription type of service but it's super flexible -- by that I mean that you get to opt out of a month if you haven't run out of your products yet. It's a great place to start if you want to try to use healthier products, but don't know where to start. When you first sign up, they give you 10$ credit to spend which is another bonus.

These are some of the most effective websites I've found on the internet when it comes to couponing and saving money. I know signing up for sites like this can sound overwhelming and can seem like busy work, but it's really worth it in the end. You end up saving hundreds of dollars if you consistently use them.

Things to Remember + More Tips & Tricks

Organize --  the moment after you clip. I feel like this is super important because it helps you stay on top of it and doesn't give you a chance to lose or misplace coupons. It saves you from having to shuffle through piles of papers and the hassle of realizing you may have thrown away a coupon you really wanted to use when you were tidying up.

Double / Stack Coupons. This is like couponing expert level. If you find a store coupon for a certain item and then combine it with a manufacture's coupon, it's double the savings! Not all stores allow doubling up on coupons, but when you find those that do, shop there more often!

Don't Be Afraid To Price Match -- especially on the items that you already have a coupon for. If you're going to a store that has a "price match" policy, then go ahead and utilize that and research before shopping.

Store Coupon Policies -- know them, print them out, be aware of what they accept before going shopping. This is tedious, I know. But it'll save you money and time if you know where you can get more for your buck.

Buy Only What You Need. This is a tricky one because sometimes you find coupons that are super great, but you may have not had that certain item on your list. I struggle with this one and sometimes, I do buy things that are not on my list -- but I am getting better at walking past the deals that I wasn't initially looking for.

& that's a wrap!

I really hope you've found this quick "crash course" on couponing helpful. I know that a lot of you have vocalized wanting to learn to coupon, so I hope that this novel of a post gave you something you can walk away with and implement.

Just remember -- the most important thing is to stay consistent once you start and you'll be saving money in no time! Set time aside for couponing and incorporate it into a me time activity and I promise, it'll become like second nature.
